Overview: The “Cool Cosmos” web portal offers a wealth of education and outreach materials motivated by the desire to communicate the infrared world and the universe of infrared astronomy to the public.
In answering the wide public interest in space sciences, NASA has, for more than a decade, made Education and Public Outreach (EPO) an important element in their missions. The “Cool Cosmos” portal offers a wealth of education and outreach materials motivated by the desire to communicate the world of infrared astronomy to the public. Content generation, graphics production and website hosting is managed by the ICE group at IPAC and enabled by initial funding from the Spitzer Science Center.
“Cool Cosmos” hosts a wide variety of multi-disciplinary educational materials that explain the infrared as well as the multi-wavelength universe to audiences as varied as kindergarteners to amateur astronomers. In addition, the portal provides access to numerous short videos about astronomy and infrared light, posters and brochures that have become favorites with NASA education specialists as well as classroom teachers. In the years to come, “Cool Cosmos” will continue to serve as an effective tool to engage the public with science and excite the dreams of the future generation for further exploration and advances in science and technology.
