INTRODUCTION

The Infrared Space Observatory - ISO - has various capabilities to make photometric, polarimetric, imaging and spectroscopic observations between 2.5 and 240 tex2html_wrap_inline1128 m. In this part of the manual, the observer will learn about the satellite and the ground segment of ISO. The capabilities of the spacecraft and the scientific payload - including the constraints imposed - are explained.
