Search for polarized thermal emission
in Bok Globules and dense molecular cores

SCIENTIFIC ABSTRACT
   We propose to measure the polarization of thermal radiation by aligned
dust grains in dense star forming regions. Such observations, which have
been performed using KAO in the Kleinman-Low nebula and in the Galactic
Center, would allow to map the transversal component of the magnetic field
in the immediate surroundings of young stellar objects.

OBSERVATION SUMMARY
   Polarization should be measured at 100 micron, using P_100 with AOT P50,
at 200 micron, using C200_200 and AOT P51. We propose for observation: L
1551, ESO 210-6A, B 335 and S 106. They are chosen among the best studied
globules and dense molecular cores showing strong star forming activity.
Their sizes allow polarimetry at 2 to 9 positions on each object. For a
typical surface brightness of 80 MJy/sterad, polarization is measured to the
required accuracy of better than 0.3% within 32 sec per polarizer setting -
a reasonable integration time, also in view of the detector drift effects.
This yields 96 sec for 3 settings per filter per position. The background
positions have been selected on sky flux maps.
   If the instrumental polarization is not known to better than p = 0.3%,
the measurements have to be performed in a differential mode. This requires
that all positions have to be observed twice per filter, with a time
interval of several months.
